Up in the Cloud…

Up in the Cloud…

Adel Khan · March 14th 2018

Years ago, at a trade show, somebody was talking to me about Clouds. I asked them “do you mean the Joni Mitchell album? Or are you talking about the city Lando Calrissian used to look after?” It turns out it was neither and there is actually a lot more to Clouds than Joni Mitchell records and Lando Calrissian’s old neighbourhood (It was, and still is, a big, big shock to one of the team here).

But, what do you know about Clouds or more specifically The Cloud? You know you can’t escape The Cloud, The Cloud is here and it’s going to impact on your business. All the big vendors are targeting ‘Cloud Migrations’ and they’re sharpening their pencils in order to entice customers into their Cloud.

But what does this all mean? What are the vendors really up to? And is there a sting in the tail for customers? It feels to me as if everybody is, to paraphrase James Brown, ‘talking loud but saying nothing’ when it comes to The Cloud…so what is there to say?

Cloud migrations can be complex and confusing, so let’s try and simplify things a little bit and focus on the common customer concerns.

  • You’re going to want to keep your business functioning with minimal disruption.
  • You’re going to want to protect your customers data and your own data.
  • You’ll want to ensure software compliance whilst the transition to the cloud is taking place.
  • You’re going to want to understand what your licensing cost will be as you go forward.
  • And You’re going to want all the benefits of the Cloud as quickly as possible

The problem will be that the vendors will present you with so many options you won’t know which is best for you and which is best for them (it’s almost always the latter).
