And the Winner is…

And the Winner is…

Every January trains into London are packed full of people sat staring at iPads…hang on a second it’s June 2018, the World Cup has started and SAMcraft want us to think about January? Yes, yes we do…please bear with us for a moment.

Every January the train into Waterloo, and no doubt countless others, are packed with people staring at their iPads watching HD copies of the latest Hollywood films…this means it must be ‘Awards Season’ and the *torrent sites are running hot with copies of the Blu-Ray ‘screeners’ that are circulated for the consideration of the motion picture academy members.

The purpose of these ‘screeners’ is to allow members of the academy to watch the films that the studios have put forward for consideration in the Oscars. The studio submits copies of the films and the names of the participants who they feel should be considered for nomination in categories such as  ‘best film’, ‘best actress’, ‘best original screenplay’ etc etc.

The members of the academy then decide by vote, having watched the films, who should be nominated in each category, who should win and the awards are dished out at a lavish ceremony in Hollywood…so to follow our own advice from last week and cut a long story short to win an Oscar you have to submit examples of your work, receive a nomination and be judged by a panel of your industry peers…

The SAM industry has awards ceremonies and I really don’t know how the judging works…it certainly doesn’t work the same way as the Oscars because I don’t ever remember receiving a ‘screener’ of a consultant working out license metrics or compilation tapes of phone calls going back and forth about deployment or entitlement data! I’ve never had to submit examples of my work or take part in any performance based tests of my SAM knowledge, so how do the judges decide who wins what? The obvious, although slightly cynical answer, is “isn’t it normally somebody connected to the company that sponsors the awards that wins?” And I think that sadly that is more often than not the case.

Now we’re not advocating that people start putting together highlight reels of their work but if there is going to be industry awards then we would like to see some performance based measure as a judging requirement (and not a bag of money). Awards should be awarded based on credible performance measures and not by dubious ‘sponsorship associations’, at least we think they should…

We’d like to see companies independently tested, yes vendors we don’t want you anywhere near this, against  criteria set by SAM consultants (this way we do not have to rely on magic or sponsorship to understand who the best is). Wouldn’t it be better to receive an award knowing you’d won it on merit? We think so.

We think this is something that will help the industry because it will benefit customers and we’re in the business of what benefits our customers is what’s best for us…so if you’d like to discuss ways that SAMcraft could help your business then email nofear@samcraft.co.uk

*I’m assuming these naughty boys and girls are using torrent sites either that or, for some unexplainable reason, lots of academy members live on the Surrey/Hants borders and hold down jobs at top city firms…
